Based on Mailer’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, the made-for-television film was directed by the Mailer’s collaborator, Lawrence Schiller. Film Comment editor Gavin Smith will sit down with Schiller for an onstage conversation following the screening.

Following the Supreme Court's reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976, convicted murderer Gary Gilmore took the state of Utah to court to demand that it carry out his capital sentence, capturing the media's attention and the nation's imagination. Lawrence Schiller gained exclusive rights to Gilmore's story and subsequently collaborated with Norman Mailer to turn his series of interviews into a book. The resulting novel earned Mailer his second Pulitzer Prize.
